Open letter in support of the Cambridge student encampment for Palestine from members of the University of Cambridge community
Staff, students and alumni of the University and Colleges say disclose, divest, reinvest and protect
We, members of the Collegiate University of Cambridge (including staff, graduate students and alumni), stand in solidarity with Cambridge students as they launch an encampment protesting the university’s ties to Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.
Students at Cambridge join students at over a hundred universities around the world who are demanding university divestment from Israeli genocide of Palestinians. They join an admirable tradition of emancipatory struggle that includes earlier student protests against South African apartheid and the war in Vietnam.
We support our students’ right to free expression and protest. We celebrate our students’ courage in bringing urgent debates outside of the classroom environment to intervene in a catastrophic moment where we are witnessing the erosion of human rights and democratic principles.
We call on the university administration to constructively and substantively enter negotiations with the students regarding their demands to:
Disclose the University of Cambridge’s financial ties with institutions and companies complicit in Israel's violations of international law.
Divest from institutions and companies complicit in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
Reinvest by supporting Palestinian students, academics, and scholars in the University of Cambridge and the reconstruction of higher education institutions in Gaza.
Protect the academic freedoms and safety of all University of Cambridge students, faculty, and staff and become a University of Sanctuary.
